KICKFLAMEZ // “POKEDEX”

PRODUCED BY: ORIGAMI

OVERALL RATING: 70%

For whatever reason, it feels like these days, to be a rapper, you have to either be from New York, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, or Houston and I think that most of my coverage reflects that. That said, it makes me happy when I see someone from wherever-the-fuck else, USA making some moves. When I first heard Alabama rapper, KickFlamez, it was on a feature for AGenius’s most recent full-length effort, ‘Ryujin’ [check out our write-up here] and I enjoyed the cadence and energy he brought to the table. He stays consistent on that front with the release of his Origami produced track, Pokedex, a Pokémon referential track peppered with fun, summery production. Though the vocal track doubling that’s used for emphasis in this track has some tonal issues that make it come off as lethargic and some of the references feel a little hamfisted, the track is exactly what it’s meant to be: fun and paying homage to the Pokémon series in a heavy-handed way. All in all, this entertaining and, oftentimes, pretty funny track is definitely worth a spin.

You can also find KickFlamez on Spotify and Apple Music
